Benjamin Franklin steps out of Independence Hall in September 1787 and is asked what the delegates have built. "A republic," he says, "if you can keep it." That single sentence is a warning every generation since has had to answer for itself. We're tracing what Franklin, Washington, and Adams actually said about keeping a republic once you've won it, what it cost the men who signed the Declaration to pay for it, and why Federer, Marshall, and Metaxas all say America's founders saw this coming, in this edition of GNITN.
