Where Satan's Throne Was
There's a phrase tucked into Revelation 2 that's been getting a lot of attention lately, and it's not from a prophet's mouth - it's from Jesus Himself. In His letter to the church at Pergamum, He says, "I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan's throne is" (Revelation 2:13). Not a temple to Satan. Not a demon by name. A throne.
Pergamum was a real city in what's now Turkey, and it earned that description honestly. It was saturated with pagan worship - temples to Zeus, Athena, Dionysus, and Aesculapius all crowded onto and around its acropolis. Sitting above the city was a massive, throne-shaped structure known as the Great Altar of Pergamon, built in the second century BC and counted among the wonders of the ancient world. Most scholars who study Revelation 2 believe this altar, more than any single temple, is what John had in mind when he wrote those words.
The Altar That Kept Moving
Here's where the story stops being ancient history and starts feeling like it's still being written. In 1878, a German engineer named Carl Humann began excavating the altar and shipping its relief panels back to Berlin. It sat in storage for decades. Then in 1930, it went on public display in Berlin's Pergamon Museum - the same year the Nazi party's power was surging toward the takeover that would come three years later. Some teachers who walk this history, including MorningStar Ministries, have pointed out that Hitler's Nuremberg rally platform was architecturally styled after that same throne-shaped altar.
The altar's journey didn't stop there. After World War II, Soviet troops took possession of it and moved it to the USSR before it eventually made its way back to Berlin during the Cold War - the same decades that saw the Berlin Wall go up and the Cuban Missile Crisis bring the world to the edge of nuclear war. A structure connected to the phrase Satan's throne has now sat, in one form or another, at the center of three of the darkest chapters of modern history.
Cahn's Mystery of the Dark Angel
That trajectory is exactly what Jonathan Cahn traces in his new book, The Altar of Pergamon: The Mystery of the Dark Angel and the Future of the World. Sitting down with Amanda Grace to introduce it, Cahn didn't hold back on how far the mystery reaches. "What if it's behind the Cold War, behind the near destruction of the world, behind the new world order, even linked to the internet and end time prophecy", he told Grace of what the altar has touched. Cahn traces the throne's arrival in Germany to a wave of anti-Semitism and occult fascination that he says had no precedent there before - "soon as the altar comes to Germany, it's born in Germany", as he put it - culminating when the reassembled altar went on public display in Berlin in 1930, the same year he says the Nazi party's vote share jumped from 2 percent to the country's second-largest party almost overnight.
Cahn's most pointed claim is architectural. Hitler's massive Nuremberg rally platform was designed by his architect, Albert Speer, as a deliberate echo of the altar's shape. "When you see Hitler railing, he's standing on the throne of Satan", Cahn said. He adds a linguistic thread to it: the altar was built for burnt offerings, and in Greek a burnt offering wholly consumed by fire combines the words for "burnt" and "consumed" into the word holocaust. "The altar was the altar of holocaust. So the moment it arrived in Germany, the holocaust was coming", Cahn said, calling it a satanic inversion of the very sacrificial language Scripture uses for Israel's own altar of burnt offering.
The Occult Roots of a Party
Cahn traces the Nazi party's own origin back to Pergamon's land. He describes a German man who traveled to Turkey at the close of World War I, immersed himself in occult teaching there, and brought it home to found what became known to history as the Thule Society - the group whose offshoot political club would eventually become the Nazi party. "The Nazi party was born of an occult organization that was linked to the land of the throne of Satan", Cahn said, placing that origin story squarely inside the same Weimar-era window when the altar's pieces were already crossing from Turkey into Germany.
Two Monsters, One Object
Cahn doesn't stop at Nazism - he traces the same thread into communism. Karl Marx, he notes, wrote a devotional tribute to Jesus as a teenager, then was sent to Berlin at eighteen and came out writing very differently. Cahn says Marx's own words echo Satan's boast in "I will exalt my throne" (Isaiah 14:13), with Marx writing, "I will lift up my throne high above all things... I'm going to bring the world to destruction and I'm going to walk among the ruins like a god". Marx had faded into obscurity by the time the altar reached Germany - Cahn says that's the same period his Communist Manifesto was suddenly revived and carried into Russia. From there, Cahn connects Lenin's train passage through Berlin into Russia, and the birth of Joseph Stalin, which he places at the same moment the altar's excavation began in Turkey. Grace herself drew out the pattern here: "We're watching the repeat of that rebellion in heaven now manifest itself on earth", she said, tying the fraction of angels who fell in Revelation to the roughly one-third of the world that came under communist rule at its height.
The altar's custody, in Cahn's account, changed hands again after Hitler's death, when Soviet soldiers discovered it hidden in a separate Berlin bunker and took possession of it - on May Day, historically one of the Soviet Union's highest holidays. From there Cahn traces the throne into the Cold War's most dangerous moments: the Berlin Crisis that erupted in November 1958, the same month he says the altar returned to Berlin from the USSR; the standoff at Checkpoint Charlie during the building of the Berlin Wall; and finally the Cuban Missile Crisis, where Cahn notes the American Jupiter missiles that provoked Khrushchev's countermove in Cuba were stationed near the Black Sea in Turkey's Izmir province - the same region as ancient Pergamon.
One World Rising
When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, Cahn says custody of the altar effectively passed from a collapsing Soviet Union to a uniting Europe, with the European Union founded shortly after. He ties that to Revelation's picture of a woman riding a scarlet beast - "I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast" (Revelation 17:3) - noting the European Union's own commemorative coinage has pictured the Greek myth of Europa being carried off by Zeus, the same god the altar was originally built to honor. Cahn adds one more detail from that same year: the internet was conceived in 1989, and "www" transliterates in Hebrew to vav-vav-vav - the number six repeated three times. "Every computer has 666 on it", Cahn said.
Grace's 2027 Collision Course
Amanda Grace has taken the mystery a step further by tying it to a specific window on the calendar. In an Aug. 17, 2026 prophetic message, Grace connected the altar's expected return to public view with the Jewish leap year, a total solar eclipse expected in August 2027, and the early shape of the next presidential election cycle. "2027 is the cataclysmic collision course", Grace said, according to Charisma Magazine's coverage of the broadcast. In a separate word, Grace named 2027 as "critical" for the safety of the Trump administration specifically, folding the Pergamon timeline into a wider convergence she's watching around that year.
In her conversation with Cahn, Grace pointed to one more piece: the 2027 reopening lands during a Jewish leap year that includes a rare double Purim. She also raised a 2017 exhibit at New York's Museum of Modern Art titled "The Glory of Pergamon" - the same year President Trump first took office - which she connects to the political rise, roughly a decade later, of New York City's current mayor. As with any prophetic word on this list, all of this is presented here as what Cahn and Grace have said publicly, from their own broadcast, not as something this ministry has independently verified.
What's Actually Reopening
One detail worth being precise about: nothing is being rebuilt from scratch. The Pergamon Museum in Berlin closed entirely in October 2023 for a major, multi-decade restoration under the Museum Island Master Plan. The wing holding the Pergamon Altar itself is officially scheduled to reopen June 4, 2027, with the museum's south wing not expected back until around 2037. The altar has been sitting in that same museum since 1930 - what changes in 2027 is public access to it, not its existence. That's the actual event underneath the prophetic conversation, and it's worth knowing plainly before drawing conclusions from it.
Resisting the Throne
Whatever weight you put on the dates and the history, the letter to Pergamum was never really about a building - it was about a church living in its shadow. Jesus doesn't stop at acknowledging where they dwelt. He rebukes them for tolerating compromise right there in Satan's own backyard - some among them had held onto "the doctrine of Balaam" and "the doctrine of the Nicolaitans" (Revelation 2:14-15), teachings that talked believers into blending in with the idolatry around them instead of standing apart from it. Every power that later held that altar - Rome, Nazi Germany, Soviet communism - didn't invent that throne. They built it out of the same ordinary compromises Pergamum was already warned about: pride that wants worship, cruelty dressed up as order, and comfort with evil as long as it's dressed nicely enough.
So here's the challenge, whether or not the museum wing in Berlin reopens on schedule in 2027: don't wait for a throne on a hill in Turkey to decide this fight matters. Ask where a throne like it has already gone up quietly in your own life - a compromise you've stopped noticing, an allegiance to comfort or power or approval that's edged out obedience to God. "To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat" (Revelation 2:17), Jesus told that same church. Overcoming an altar this size starts small, and it starts personal - refusing it in your own heart before you ever have to worry about it in the world.
